San Marcos (Altamaha) Line Block Stamped Vessel Mission Period A.D.
1400-1700
Putnam Co. FL
16" tall, 14 1/2" across the mouth, 44 1/2" around. a5081SOLD
COMMENTS: Unusually large vessel, found near Mound Creek in Putnam
Co. Expertly restored by Lithic Art Restorations, very little added,
mostly just glued together comes with sweet
gum base from our acreage.
Early vessels of this type would be called Irene Complicated Stamped. Later
they became Altamaha pottery during the mission period along the lower coast of
Georgia. In Florida this type is known as San Marcos pottery, but it is the
same thing. This type was used heavily in the mission period by Guale people in
the St. Mary's region and southward to St. Augustine. The "buttons" along
the rim date to the Late Mississippian period Lamar pottery. The Irene series
along the northern Georgia coast and Lamar are considered to be the same by Mark
Williams at UGA. Chester DePratter keeps Irene separate from Lamar. Chester is
a pier of Mark's, but controls archaeological training along the coast.
One similar pot was recovered by C.B. Moore. Kathleen Deagan and David Hurst
Thomas did a study of this area entitled From
Santa Elena to St. Augustine: Indigenous Ceramic Variability (A.D. 1400-1700).
Thanks to Lloyd Schroder for the information on this vessel type. This
is a beautiful pot, impressive and displays very well. These are becoming very scarce. Sorry,
will not ship. You can pick up here or at a show.

1 1/2" $200 order a4841
COMMENTS: flat, smooth, shallow depression gouged out one side.

Composite Barbed Gig Various time periods, Taylor Co. FL
6 3/4" $750 order a4693
COMMENTS: unusual bone shaft with one end deeply gouged out to receive the
barb. Although this barb was not attached when found, it was found nearby
and most likely at one time was tied on. The length of the pin has been
worked extensively on all surfaces, to make an essentially round shaft.
The groove to receive the barb is also extremely well developed, precise and
deep. Equally, the barb is sharp and well formed. All in all, an
outstanding example of a rare prehistoric tool seldom available.
