CAMEL
Floridatragulus was one of Florida's early camels, called "bizarre" by Richard Hulbert in his book The Fossil Vertebrates of Florida (p.260) because of its very long, narrow snout with four upper canine-like teeth which are far apart.  On the lower jaw, the premolars p3 and p4 are also separated by a considerable distance.  Another identifying feature on this camelid is the posterior open eye orbit, such as found on the smaller Oligocene Poebrotherium, and a deep crease where the third lobe of m3 attaches to the second lobe.  The other rare camelid in the Late Early Miocene was Nothokemas floridanus.  It had minor differences from the Floridatragulus, the molars are have low crowns with more pronounced ribs and intercolumnar tubercles.  It also lacked the bizarre canniniform incisors.  It is rarely represented in Florida, but found elsewhere only in coastal Texas. Both of these rare animals are represented below.
